Gardens start on the right; the path becomes gravelled before reaching a lane at TM474598; turn right along this road for a few yards to reach a T-junction with North End Avenue. After wandering through the bushes we finally arrive at a T-junction which is an old railway track the old station is straight ahead, 11. At the end of the path turn right onto the B1353 and walk for about 200 metres and you will see Thorpeness Meare on your right. At TM475645, one mile after leaving the road, turn left immediately before some anti-tank blocks to head westwards across heathland. Turn Left and follow FP24 400 m to FP20 on your left. The House in the Clouds was originally built as a water tower in 1923 to receive water pumped from Thorpeness Windmill which you will see on the opposite side of the path, it was converted to a house in 1979 and is now rented out as a holiday home. Its noted for its populations of Eurasian bittern, European nightjar & other bird species. The Meare was begun in 1911 and opened in 1913, and what is now the country club was opened in 1912. On the rights some beautiful almshouses, Margaret Ogilvie Almshouses were erected in 1926, originally for workmen by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie as part of his fantasy holiday village, 5. A good path continues northwards across grass, with the fence of Sizewell power station hidden to the left. As you approach the North Warren Nature Reserve you will see a public footpath sign on the right-hand side, as you follow the path you will see part of the Thorpeness Meare on your right before merging with the Thorpeness golf course on your left. This was a superb and interesting walk, following the Sandlings Walk north to the vanishing town of Dunwich before returning along the coast. But the intervention of war meant its use fell short of expectations and the little station never grew from three converted railway carriages that housed its essentials. Experienced this walk on a lovely 20+ degree morning. A few hundred yards after entering the woodland turn right along a footpath that heads in a rough easterly direction through the trees, eventually leaving them to cross a stream and enter Dunwich Heath. A woman on a horse was waiting by the gate, her dogs playing in the water. From the meare cross over the B1353 and you will see a pay and display car park. All other rights reserved.
