Absolutely spectacular. If you enter from the other side, make sure your car is well suited to off road. Very similar to Flat Rock which I will go into below. Its ridiculous how many resorts and hotels were being built on top of giant mountains back then. The drive all the way from Laguna to Pokolbin, through Wollombi and Broke is absolutely beautiful. Believe me when I say, you will probably be the only people out there for at least a 10km radius in any direction, so you have the entire mountain to yourself. However assuming that you are better organised than us, Audrey Wilkinson is the perfect place to catch a glorious Hunter Valley sunset. Forget what Susan from accounting told you about weddings, she is outdated and you cant stand her anyway! Planted at the bottom of the Brokenback Mountain Ranges, Audrey Wilkinson is a must-see iconic Hunter Valley vineyard. If coming by public transport you can take the train to Singleton, which takes just over three hours direct - but make sure you get on the fastest service or it can take a lot longer. There are 10 individually themed gardens, our favourite spots were the Italian Grotto and the Oriental Garden which had a peaceful feel. The picturesque heritage town of Wollombi is the other place we recommend visiting in the Hunter Valley, and its just 35 minutes from Pokolbin. With the gorgeous Port Stephens water behind you in the distance, this place is just stunning. The park is also home to a garden of teddy bear cholla cactuses, which are pictured below. Located up in Olney State Forest, this beautiful Pine Forest provides the perfect backdrop for a more moody engagement photoshoot location. Combining stunning European vibes with their property, and the amazing, lush bushland and forest surrounding, you can;t go wrong. The tastings ($10pp) take place on individual tables in the stunning courtyard with lots of shady trees, resident peacocks and soft jazz playing in the background. Finchleys lookout offers amazing 360 views of the remote wilderness area and an insight into the Aboriginal cultural heritage of Yengo National Park. Undercliff also hosts a sculpture exhibition among the vines which is held every October/November. I need to say a word of warning here though this location is a bit risky. From Singleton its probably easiest to then catch a taxi onwards to Pokolbin. The cave houses a spectacular depiction of Baiame, the great spirit and creator of the land and every living thing. This spot does require some climbing and trekking out over the rock platform, which at high tide do go under water. If you take the last tour of the day, dont forget to walk down to the vines to look for the resident kangaroos. With the iconic blue steps at your disposal, you can create some amazingly cool photos here. You get given a long list of gins, vodkas and schnapps and you can pick any six to try. The service was not especially friendly, but we were there for the cheese so we still enjoyed it. Maybe the city is a bit more your thing? Be very careful as it is very rocky and uneven for the first few hundred metres. In Lovedale they are almost always in the fields opposite the Crowne Plaza Hotel; in Pokolbin look at the fields along McDonalds Road and if you plan on visiting Wollombi we see them every time along the Yango Creek Road.
